Short answer: a standard general pest treatment covers cockroaches, ants and spiders. Rodent control is an add on, booked on top, and it does not come automatically with a pest visit. When both are booked they are done on the same visit. At a home, the rodent side runs on baits that are specific to residential properties under the updated rules, in lockable stations, with a follow up check of the stations and the activity booked in. Once that check shows the level of activity, the plan is set from there.

Two jobs on one visit

Pest control Mermaid Waters. A lockable rodent station against the wall, and the general pest perimeter spray going down on the lawn by the pool fence.

The photos are the two halves of the visit. On the right is the general pest control, a perimeter treatment along the lawn beside the pool fence. On the left is the rodent work, a lockable station set against the wall of the house.

Booking them together means one visit instead of two. It does not make them the same job. They use different products, they follow different rules, and the rodent half comes with a scheduled follow up check of its own.

What the general pest control covers

A standard general pest treatment is cockroaches, ants and spiders. That is the whole standard scope, and it is what this customer has had with us for a long time.

The warranty on that side is set. Australian cockroaches carry 6 months and ants carry 3 months. Webbing spiders carry a warranty. Other spiders do not, because they keep crawling back in from outside.

Rodents are part of our pest control service, but not part of that standard treatment. They are an add on. A general pest visit on its own does not put stations in, which is why the rodent work here was booked on top.

A lot of rodent activity in the area

Rodents do not stop at a property line. When a neighbourhood has a lot of activity, each yard is part of the same picture, and rodents move between them along fences, garden beds and drains.

With that much activity around, the rodent work went in alongside the general pest control on this visit. Stations at the edge of the house are there to deal with rodents on their way past, before they find a way inside.

If they do get in, the roof void is one of the first places the evidence shows up. Our post on what a pest control visit looks for in the roof void covers what we look for up there.

Baits for a home are not the same as baits for a business

Under the updated rules, the baits used here are specific to residential properties. That is not a preference. Some rodent baits are labelled for commercial and industrial sites only and must not be used in a domestic setting at all, so a house runs on a narrower set of products.

The baits that can go on a home come with their own conditions. Outdoor stations sit close to the house, locked, weather resistant and secured in place. Outside, they are there for rats, not mice. Bait never goes into a burrow. And the bait cannot just stay down indefinitely.

The stations are what keep it safe from day to day. They open with a key, they are anchored where they sit, and the bait stays inside rather than on the ground, out of reach of children and pets.

The scheduled follow up check

The follow up check is already booked. Under the updated rules, a licensed technician has to come back within a set period, check the stations and the activity, and record the result. Every licensed pest controller in Australia now runs residential rodent work this way, so rodent control at a home is a minimum of two visits.

At that check we are reading the level of activity. The signs are practical ones: how much bait has gone from each station, fresh droppings, gnaw marks, dark rub marks along walls and edges, and any dead rodents, which are removed at every visit.

Then the plan

Once the activity level is determined, the course of action follows from it, station by station rather than as one decision for the whole yard.

Where activity is low or has stopped, the bait comes out, and a non toxic monitor can take its place so anything coming back still shows up. Where it is still active, baiting continues in those spots, the reason goes on the record, and the next check is booked.

The general pest control carries on as normal alongside it. Rodent warranties are assessed for each property on an as needs basis, depending on the circumstances there and on the infestation itself.

Cost follows what the property needs, and the estimate covers both the treatment and the follow up check. The minimum call-out fee is $145 plus GST. If the carpets are due as well, carpet cleaning Mermaid Waters can go on the same visit.

Frequently asked questions

Is rodent control included in general pest control?
No. A standard general pest treatment covers cockroaches, ants and spiders. Rodent control is part of our pest control service but it is an add on, booked on top, so stations only go in when rodent work is booked.
Can general pest control and rodent control be done on the same visit?
Yes. When both are booked they are done together, which saves a second trip. The rodent side then has its own follow up check, booked within a set period.
Why are the rodent baits at a house different from a business?
Under the updated rules some rodent baits are labelled for commercial and industrial sites only and must not be used in a domestic setting. A home runs on baits that are specific to residential properties, in locked stations close to the house.
What do you look at when you check the stations?
How much bait has gone from each station, fresh droppings, gnaw marks, rub marks along walls and edges, and any dead rodents, which are removed. Together those show the level of activity, and the plan follows from it.
Will the rodent stations stay baited on my property permanently?
No. Under the updated rules bait cannot stay down indefinitely. Once the activity drops away the bait comes out, and a non toxic monitor can take its place so any return still shows up.
What warranty comes with general pest control and rodents?
Australian cockroaches carry 6 months and ants carry 3 months. Webbing spiders carry a warranty, other spiders do not. For rodents, a warranty may apply depending on the circumstances at the property and on the infestation itself, assessed on an as needs basis.
