Short answer: No, not on its own. Carpet cleaning removes dirt, debris and some flea eggs and larvae from the fibre, and it genuinely helps, but it carries no insecticide. A real flea problem needs a licensed pest treatment as well as a clean, ideally booked close together.

What carpet cleaning actually does for fleas
Truck mounted extraction physically pulls dirt, hair, debris and some flea eggs and larvae out of the carpet fibre, and that does reduce numbers. What it does not do is leave behind an insecticide or target the flea life cycle directly. A clean carpet can still be host to an active flea problem straight after the van leaves, which is the main source of confusion behind the carpet flea treatment question.
Why a real flea problem needs pest treatment too
The fleas you actually see are a small part of the picture. Eggs, larvae and pupae sit deep in carpet fibre, along skirting boards and in cracks in flooring, often outnumbering the visible adults many times over. A licensed technician's treatment is designed to work through that whole life cycle, not just the fleas jumping around on the day. This is also why "licensed technician" applies to the pest treatment side of the job, not the carpet cleaning side, which needs no licence in Queensland.
Why fleas seem to get worse right after treatment
This one catches people out every time. Eggs and pupae that were already sitting in the carpet before the technician arrived can keep hatching for a period afterward, since pupae are naturally protected and are not always affected straight away by the treatment. Seeing more fleas in the days right after a treatment is normal, not a sign it has not worked. Activity generally drops off over the following one to two weeks as the remaining life cycle plays out and the treatment does its job.
A real flea job, done in the right order
A recent Gold Coast job shows how this actually plays out. The home had an active flea problem, and the customer had 3 cats. We started with a quick knockdown treatment to hit any fleas active on surfaces straight away, then carried out a hot steam truck mounted carpet clean while the customer took the cats to the vet for their own flea treatment, timed so they would come home flea free rather than walking straight back into a treated house mid-process. Once the carpet clean was done, we re-applied flea treatment to the carpeted areas and every other appropriate harbourage spot around the home. A follow up treatment is a standard part of our process on flea jobs, and one was scheduled, but when we arrived it was not actually needed. No fleas were evident, and the customer confirmed she had not seen or felt anything since the initial treatment, so the infestation was already gone. She was not charged for that follow up visit.
