Short answer: fleas live just as readily in couch and lounge upholstery as they do in carpet, especially wherever a pet sits or sleeps, so treating the carpet alone after a flea problem often leaves the couch as an ongoing source of reinfestation. Both need genuine cleaning and pest treatment for the problem to actually clear.

Why fleas move into upholstery, not just carpet
Fleas do not distinguish between carpet fibre and couch fabric, both offer the same thing, a warm, protected place close to where a pet regularly sits or sleeps. A couch cushion a pet naps on daily is just as viable a habitat as the carpet underneath it, which is why treating one and not the other so often leaves the problem only half solved.
Signs fleas are in the couch, not just the floor
Small dark specks in the seams and folds of cushions, visible movement when you press into the fabric, or bites concentrated on people who sit on a specific piece of furniture are all signs the couch itself is harbouring fleas, not just the surrounding carpet.
Treating the couch alongside the carpet
Since a carpet treatment does not automatically reach upholstery, the couch needs its own attention, both a genuine clean to remove fleas, eggs and debris from the fabric, and pest treatment addressing the infestation itself. Doing one without the other tends to leave a source for reinfestation sitting in the room.
What to do while you wait for treatment
Vacuum the couch thoroughly, including seams, cushion folds and underneath cushions, and dispose of the vacuum bag or empty the canister outside afterwards. Keep pets off the couch where practical until treatment, since ongoing contact makes it harder to fully clear.

Can fleas live in a couch even if pets do not usually sit on it?
Yes, though it is far more likely wherever a pet does spend time. Fleas and their eggs can also be carried in on clothing or bedding and settle into upholstery in rooms a pet rarely enters, just less commonly.
Do I need separate treatment for the couch and the carpet?
Generally yes. A carpet treatment does not automatically reach upholstery, and fleas left in the couch can simply move back to a freshly treated carpet. Both need addressing for the treatment to actually hold.
Is couch cleaning enough to remove fleas on its own?
Cleaning helps physically remove fleas, eggs and debris from the fabric, but it is not a substitute for pest treatment. The two work together, cleaning addresses what is visible and embedded, treatment addresses the infestation itself.
How do I stop fleas coming back to the couch after treatment?
Treat the couch, the carpet and the yard together where relevant, since fleas move between all three. Vacuuming upholstery regularly in the weeks after treatment also helps catch any newly hatched fleas before they re-establish.
