This one is a lived in home, owner occupied, with the carpet clean and a general pest treatment booked into the same visit. Van on the kerb, both jobs done in one go.

The customer chose to head out while we worked and come back in the early afternoon, so everything had the time it needed to dry properly before anyone was walking through it again. That was their call, not a rule we set. It just happens to be the easiest way to run a combined day.

What being out of the house actually protects

Two things are drying at once on a day like this, and they dry on different clocks.

The pest side is applied to the areas that actually need it, not sprayed through the whole house. Those treated areas need to stay clear until they are dry. We confirm the exact timing before we leave, and it is usually a few hours. The one people forget is the mop: wiping treated skirtings too soon takes the product off before it has finished working.

The carpet side runs on truck mounted extraction, which pulls far more moisture out at the point of cleaning than a portable or hire machine. Nobody home means nobody crossing a treated doorway, nobody walking damp carpet to get to the kitchen, and windows that can stay open for the airflow. That is all going out really buys you.

The order on the day

The pest treatment goes down first and the carpet clean follows. Done the other way round, people end up walking a freshly treated perimeter while the carpet is still wet, which disturbs one and puts traffic across the other. When the house is empty of people, the sequence runs without anyone having to be shuffled from room to room. When someone is home, it still works, it just takes a bit more thought about where everyone sits.

If you would rather stay home

That is fine, and plenty of people do. Pick a room away from where the work is happening, and plan to stay put for a while.

Keep pets and children out of treated areas until they are dry and off the carpet until it has dried. Tell us about kids, pets or an aquarium when you book, so the treatment gets planned around them rather than the other way round. Run the fans or the air conditioning and leave the doors between rooms open so the air can move.

If a lounge is on the job as well, treat it separately in your head. A lounge takes longer to dry than carpet, the rest of the day at an absolute minimum, and we advise staying off it until the following day.

A standard general pest treatment covers cockroaches, ants and spiders, and it comes with a report. Rodents, fleas, silverfish, wasps, midges, mosquitoes and vinegar flies are all things we treat, booked on top as add ons rather than assumed to come with it. Termites are a different trade and we refer those out.

On warranty, Australian cockroaches carry 6 months and ants carry 3 months. Webbing spiders carry a warranty and other spiders do not. For anything on the add on list, whether a warranty applies depends on the circumstances at that particular property and on the infestation itself, assessed on an as needs basis.

Booking both into one visit means one call-out instead of two. The minimum call-out fee is $145 plus GST. The carpet side follows the number of carpeted rooms and any stairs, the pest side follows the size of the property, and you get an estimate rather than a quote because those details get confirmed on site.
