Short answer: when ants are coming in beside a bench top, the bait does not go on the bench. At this Coombabah home, a regular customer's annual visit, the ants were getting through cracks in the timber around the bench top. We set an ant bait station, the one we call an ant cafe, near the windowsill. The bait stays off the bench, so there is no contamination, and the ants come to it and take the bait. The general pest treatment went in inside and out, and three bedrooms and the stairs were carpet cleaned.

An annual visit for a regular customer

This is a regular customer. Once a year they have the general pest control and the carpet clean done in the one visit. On other visits we have also cleaned their bed heads and bed frames.
This year the pest side had something specific to sort out: ants getting in around the bench top.
Ant control Coombabah: where the ants were getting in
Cracks in the timber around the bench top were where the ants were getting through. Ants need very little room, and a crack in timber is plenty.
The natural reaction is to spray the trail on the bench. It is the wrong end to start from. It kills the ants you can see, leaves the nest alone, and puts product on a surface where food goes.
Why the bait went beside the windowsill, not on the bench
We placed an ant bait station near the windowsill. We call it an ant cafe: a small glass with paper in it, carrying the bait.
It does two jobs. It keeps the bait off the bench top, so there is no contamination where food is prepared. And it draws the ants to it, so they take the bait.

The bait station was one part of the visit. The general pest treatment went in inside and out, with the hand sprayer working through the kitchen and the laundry as well.
A standard general pest treatment covers cockroaches, ants and spiders. Other pests, such as rodents or wasps, are add ons booked on top. Australian cockroaches carry 6 months and ants carry 3 months. Webbing spiders carry a warranty, other spiders do not, because they keep crawling back in from outside. The treatment comes with a report.

On the carpet side, three bedrooms and the stairs were cleaned. Stairs are worth including. They take every trip up and down the house, and the front edge of each tread wears hardest.
