A waterfront lawn, a young family, and no ants in the kitchen. That was the job in this photo, and it is a better moment to book ant control Gold Coast homes need than the morning a trail turns up along the bench. Ants live outside. Dealing with them out there, before they find a way in, is the easy end of the problem.

This is a regular customer at a waterfront home with a young family. The booking was a precautionary lawn and perimeter ant treatment, and no significant activity was found indoors.
That last part is the point. Nothing had gone wrong. There was no trail across the kitchen and no nest in the pantry. The treatment went down outside, where ants actually live, before they had a reason to come in.
With young kids running around the house and the lawn, staying ahead of ants is simpler than chasing them once they are already inside.
Ants nest outside. Lawns, garden beds, under pavers, along the edge of a slab. They come inside for food and water, and once one finds something worth having, the rest follow the same line.
So the work starts out there. The lawn, the garden edges and the perimeter of the house, the strip where outside meets in. Treating that strip means ants meet the treatment on their way in, rather than being sprayed once they have already made it to the bench.
Inside is still part of a general pest treatment, for cockroaches and spiders as well as ants. A perimeter treatment is not a substitute for the inside work, it is the half that stops ants arriving in the first place.
Most people meet ants as a line across the kitchen. The natural thing is to spray the line. It works for an afternoon.
The trouble is that the ants on the bench are a small fraction of the nest, and the nest is somewhere outside. Knocking out the trail does nothing to where they are coming from, and it can scatter them. Our kitchen ant guide goes through what to do in the meantime without making it worse.
Gold Coast weather drives a lot of this. Heavy rain floods nests in the lawn and the garden, and the ants go looking for higher, drier ground, which is often your kitchen. That is why ants appear after rain in homes that never had them the week before.
A waterfront block with a big lawn has plenty of nesting ground right up to the house. Getting the perimeter treated ahead of the wet weather is the practical version of being prepared.
Two exceptions are worth knowing before you book.
Fire ants are a declared pest, and the Gold Coast sits inside the fire ant biosecurity zone. If you think you have them, that is reported to Biosecurity Queensland, not treated as an ordinary ant problem. Our fire ants post covers how to tell them apart.
Termites, the ones people call white ants, are not ants at all and not our trade. They are referred out to a termite specialist with the right licensing.
A treatment comes with a report, so you know what was done and where.
On warranty: ants carry 3 months as part of a general pest treatment, and Australian cockroaches carry 6 months. Webbing spiders carry a warranty, other spiders do not, because they keep crawling back in from outside. Rodents, fleas, silverfish, wasps, midges, mosquitoes and vinegar flies are add ons, booked on top rather than assumed.
Cost follows the size of the property and what the job involves, with a minimum call-out fee of $145 plus GST. The pest control page sets out the standard treatment, and if the carpets are due as well, the carpet cleaning page covers that side. One visit for both saves a second trip.
