Why rain triggers ants indoors
Most ant colonies nest in the ground, and a heavy downpour floods that nest. The colony's response is to move to drier, higher ground fast, and a house nearby is often the easiest option. That is why a run of Gold Coast rain followed by a dry, warm day is one of the most common triggers for a trail appearing along a kitchen bench or window sill that was ant free the week before.
Why spraying the trail does not usually work
A can of spray from the supermarket kills the ants you can see, but the nest itself is untouched, and a colony can hold thousands of ants. Within a few days a new trail often appears, sometimes from a slightly different entry point around the same room. It looks like the problem is back because it never actually left.
What to do if you find a trail
In the kitchen: wipe down the trail and the area around it to remove the scent trail other ants are following, then find and seal where they are entering, not just the spot where you see them.
Near windows: check the seal and any small gaps in the frame, ants can use surprisingly small openings.
Remove the food source. Crumbs, spills, uncovered pet food and rubbish bins are the most common reasons a trail keeps returning to the exact same spot.
