Why the first 24 hours matter most
Mould risk rises sharply the longer carpet stays wet, and Gold Coast humidity accelerates that timeline further than a drier climate would. What you do in the first 24 to 48 hours has more influence on whether the carpet can be saved than anything done afterwards.
Extracting the water
Remove as much standing water as possible as early as possible, towels for a small area, a wet vacuum for anything larger. The goal is pulling moisture out of the carpet and underlay as fast as you reasonably can, not just soaking up what is visible on the surface.
Getting airflow moving
Fans and, if you have access to one, a dehumidifier, running continuously in the affected room help the carpet and underlay actually dry rather than just sit damp. Open windows where humidity outside is lower than inside, and keep air moving across the wet area specifically, not just around the room generally.
When professional water damage restoration is needed
A significant water event, a burst pipe, a roof leak, or flooding, is a different job to a routine clean. Professional restoration properly extracts moisture, dries carpet, underlay and subfloor, and assesses genuine mould risk, rather than treating it as a bigger version of a normal carpet clean.
