Why 12 months is the general rule

Twelve months is the point where most Gold Coast homes have built up enough trapped dirt, body oils and dust to need more than a vacuum can give. It is not an arbitrary number either, it lines up with what most carpet manufacturers actually specify to keep their warranties valid, which is worth checking on the paperwork from when the carpet was installed.

When to clean more often

Pets bring in outdoor dirt and shed constantly, so homes with a dog or cat do better on a 6 to 9 month cycle. Small children spend more time on the floor than anyone else in the house, which means more direct contact with whatever is trapped in the pile. Allergy sufferers benefit from the shorter cycle too, since dust mites and pet dander build up steadily between cleans. High traffic areas, hallways, living rooms, the path from the front door to the kitchen, wear faster than bedrooms and formal areas and can often use a clean before the rest of the house needs one.

Why vacuuming alone is not enough

A vacuum lifts loose surface dirt, which matters and should still happen weekly. What it cannot reach is what has settled deep into the pile and underlay, body oils, trapped moisture, bacteria and the dust mites that live on all of it. That only comes out with truck mounted extraction, which pulls it from the base of the fibre rather than just the top.

What happens if it is left too long

Dirt and grit trapped in the pile acts like sandpaper every time the carpet is walked on, cutting into the fibres and wearing them out faster than regular cleaning ever would. Left long enough, that wear becomes visible traffic lanes that no amount of cleaning can fully reverse. Waiting also makes stains harder to lift, since they have longer to set into the fibre.
