How Much Does Couch and Upholstery Cleaning Cost on the Gold Coast?

Not every couch job starts with a stain or a pet accident. This one started with a customer who saw us working on their street in Burleigh Heads and came over to ask about their own couches on the spot. We were booked out well in advance, as we usually are, so we could not fit them in there and then, but they were happy to work around our schedule for a booking that suited us both.

The couches themselves were not in poor condition, no major stains, no odour problem to chase down. They just needed a proper hygiene clean, the kind of everyday build-up every couch collects with regular use, refreshed before it ever became a bigger job. It is a good example of what a lot of our upholstery work actually looks like, proactive maintenance rather than a rescue job.

Why there is no flat rate

Couch cleaning gets the same phone question as carpet cleaning: "what does it cost?" The honest answer is we cannot give one without seeing the piece, because upholstery cleaning covers a much wider range of jobs than most people expect. A two seat fabric sofa with light everyday wear is a different job to a five seat leather lounge suite with pet stains worked into the cushions.

That is why we give an estimate, not a quote. A minimum call-out of $145 plus GST applies to every job. This covers the technician's time to properly check the fabric or leather, the soiling, and what is actually involved before any cleaning starts, so the figure you get reflects your couch, not an average.

What actually drives the price

• Fabric type. Every fabric couch carries a cleaning code that determines the safe method, and some fabrics need more careful handling than others.
• Leather versus fabric. Leather is a different process altogether, cleaned and conditioned rather than water extracted, and it takes more time.
• Size. Number of seats, cushions and any matching ottomans or armchairs.
• Soiling and pet odour. Everyday wear cleans differently to pet accidents that need antibacterial or antimicrobial enzyme treatment.
• Access. Ground floor with easy parking is a different job to a third floor apartment with a lift and a long carry to the van.

None of these make a job good or bad, they just change what is involved, and an accurate estimate accounts for all of them before we start.

Can all couches be steam cleaned?

No, and this is where a lot of upholstery cleaning goes wrong. Fabric couches can generally be cleaned with truck mounted or commercial grade portable extraction, once the fabric's own cleaning code is checked so the right method and products are used. Leather is a completely different material. It is never water extracted. Water and steam can strip a leather's finish or damage the hide, so leather gets cleaned and conditioned with leather specific products instead, never the same process as a fabric sofa next to it.

This matters for pet odour too. Steam alone does not remove urine odour from either fabric or leather, it needs antibacterial enzyme treatment for standard soiling, or antimicrobial enzyme treatment for heavier, more established odour, because the enzymes break down the organic matter causing the smell rather than covering it.

Why the cheapest option is not always the cheapest

A low price on upholstery cleaning sometimes means a shortcut, and shortcuts show up later on furniture, not just carpet. Over-wetting a fabric couch can leave it taking days to dry and smelling musty from moisture trapped in the cushion foam. Using a water based process on leather can crack, stain or dull the finish permanently, damage that cannot be undone with a second clean. And masking pet odour instead of treating the actual cause with enzyme treatment just means the smell comes back. Paying once for the right process on the right material is usually cheaper than paying twice, or replacing upholstery that did not need replacing.
