Gold Coast cat urine carpet cleaning Mermaid Beach, in an apartment the owners had only just moved into. Their cat had urinated and vomited in several parts of the carpeted areas, something they told us it had never done before. The carpet was natural wool, and wool asks for a little patience.

The owners had just moved in. Not long after, their cat urinated and vomited in various parts of the carpeted areas. They told us it had never done this before.
The photo shows one of the urine patches. On a pale wool loop carpet it shows up as a darker ring, sitting right at the edge where the carpet meets the timber.
Urine and vomit are different messes, but both are organic, and both get the same thinking from us: break the source down at the fibre, rather than cover it up.
We see this very regularly. A cat or dog that has been perfectly reliable for years moves into a new home, and suddenly there are accidents on the carpet.
There are a few usual explanations. The animal may be marking its territory in a space that does not smell like its own yet. It may be anxious, or just not comfortable in the new place. Sometimes it is a bit of all three.
We will be honest about our limits here. We do not speak cat, or dog, so we cannot tell you exactly which one it is for your pet. What we can tell you is that it is common, it does not mean the carpet is ruined, and it is worth dealing with quickly.
Quickly matters for another reason. A spot that still carries urine, even one people can no longer smell, can draw a pet back to the same place. If the accidents keep going once your pet has had time to settle, a chat with your vet is worth having too.
Cat urine does not stay on top of a carpet. It soaks down into the pile and around the base of the fibre, where a towel never reaches.
Our antibacterial enzyme treatment went into the affected carpet to break that organic matter down at the source, rather than masking the smell.
Alongside it, we applied a product we know keeps working even after the clean is finished. With urine in wool, the work does not always stop the moment we pack up, so it helps to have something still doing its job afterwards.
What we did not do is throw hot water or steam at it. Heat can set an acidic urine stain into the fibre, and on wool that is the last thing you want.
The carpet responded very quickly to the treatment. That is a good sign. On natural fibre, it is still not the end of the story.
Wool is a natural fibre, and natural fibres take up and hold onto what goes into them. Urine is no exception.
With cat urine in wool, there is often real luck getting the carpet back to normal. It just takes time. It is not a case of applying a product and watching the problem vanish. In most cases it does not work like that, and we would rather say so up front than have you expect it.
Wool also needs the right products. What suits a synthetic carpet can be hard on wool, so the products are matched to the fibre. There is more on that in our carpeted stairs and wool carpet post.
Before we left, we asked the owners to keep us informed over the next 7 to 10 days.
That window gives the treatment time to keep working, and gives the cat time to show whether it has settled in. If any area still needs attention, we go back and apply a topical treatment to that spot.
It also means the owners know exactly what to watch for, and who to call, rather than wondering whether a faint mark is going to stay.
Blot it with a clean, dry cloth. Do not scrub, because scrubbing pushes it sideways and further down into the pile.
Keep heat away from it. No hot water and no steam.
Do not cover it with a fabric spray. Masking the smell leaves the cause in the carpet, and your pet can often still find it.
For vomit, lift what you can off the surface first, then blot. Our pet odour guide covers the first few minutes in more detail.
Then call early. A fresh accident is far easier to deal with than a patch that has had weeks to soak in, particularly on wool.
It follows the number of carpeted rooms, counted one per room, and how much enzyme treatment the carpet needs. A couple of fresh accidents and a carpet with months of marking are different amounts of work, and they are priced that way.
The minimum call-out fee is $145 plus GST, the same across the Gold Coast to Tweed Heads area. You get an estimate rather than a quote, because the fibre and how far the urine has gone are things we confirm in front of the carpet. Apartments need lift access and off street parking with clear van access. The Mermaid Beach carpet cleaning page covers the local side, and the full process is on the carpet cleaning Gold Coast page.
