Why fleas keep coming back

The fleas you see jumping are adults, roughly 5% of the total population at any one time. The other 95% is eggs, larvae and pupae, mostly hidden deep in carpet fibre, rugs, pet bedding and shaded areas of the yard. Pupae are the hardest stage to kill: they can lie dormant in a protective cocoon for weeks or months, waiting for the vibration, warmth and carbon dioxide of a passing host to trigger hatching. That is why a home can seem flea free for a while, then suddenly have an active infestation again.

The DIY protocol, step by step

1. Treat every pet, same day. Use a vet approved flea product on all pets in the home, not just the one you think is affected. Untreated pets keep the cycle going.
2. Vacuum daily for 14 days. Every carpeted area, rug, and soft furnishing, including under furniture and along skirting boards. Empty the vacuum bag or canister outside the home immediately each time, eggs and larvae can survive inside it.
3. Hot wash all bedding. Pet bedding and any affected human bedding, at least 60 degrees Celsius where the fabric allows.
4. Treat outdoor shaded areas. Fleas breed in cool, humid, shaded parts of the yard where pets rest. Treating only indoors while the yard stays untreated is a common reason infestations return.
5. Repeat the vacuum cycle. Keep vacuuming daily through the full 14 days even once fleas seem gone, this is what catches newly hatched fleas before they establish again.

Do I legally need a flea treatment to end my lease in QLD?

Many Queensland rental agreements with a pet clause include a condition requiring a professional flea treatment at vacate, with a receipt provided to the agent as proof. The exact wording varies between agencies and individual lease agreements, so check yours directly. A licensed flea treatment receipt is generally what property managers want to see at final inspection.

How long does a flea treatment take to work?

A professional treatment targets eggs and larvae as well as adult fleas, but it commonly takes one to two weeks to see fleas fully gone as remaining eggs continue to hatch and die off on the treated surface. That is expected, not a sign the treatment has failed.

Do I need to vacate during flea treatment?

Typically you will need to stay off treated areas for a set drying period, commonly a couple of hours, and keep pets off the treated area until it is fully dry. Exact timing can vary by product and the area treated, and we will confirm the specifics with you before the job.

Why fleas seem worse right after treatment

Eggs and pupae that were not yet adults at the time of treatment continue hatching for several days afterward and are then exposed to the treated surface, which can make activity briefly more visible before it drops off. Expect this in the days right after treatment, it is the life cycle finishing, not the treatment failing.

When DIY will not cut it

Call a licensed professional for a whole house infestation, for a rental vacate where the lease requires a receipt, or if fleas keep returning from outdoor sources like local wildlife that DIY treatment cannot control.
