Short answer: yes, mattress cleaning Gold Coast homes should book at least once a year. Sheets only protect the top layer, while body oils, sweat, dust and dust mites work their way into the padding underneath over time, none of which washing the bedding reaches. Urine needs antibacterial enzyme treatment specifically, never a deodoriser and never hot water.

What actually builds up in a mattress
A mattress absorbs body oils and sweat every single night, along with skin cells that dust mites feed on directly. None of it stays on the surface for long, it works down into the padding where a vacuum or a wipe over cannot reach. Washing the sheets keeps the top layer fresh, but it does nothing for what has already soaked in underneath.
Dust mites live in the padding, not just the surface
Dust mites breed in the mattress padding itself, feeding on shed skin cells and thriving in the warm, slightly humid environment a bed creates overnight. Vacuuming the surface removes some, but professional cleaning reaches into the padding, which is where the population is actually established.
Urine needs a different approach entirely
If urine has soaked into a mattress, whether from a child, a pet, or an accident, it needs antibacterial enzyme treatment, which breaks down the odour causing bacteria at the source. A deodoriser only masks the smell rather than treating it, and hot water sets the stain into the fabric instead of lifting it out. This is the same rule that applies to carpet and upholstery, and it applies just as strictly to a mattress.
How long it takes to dry
A mattress generally takes longer than carpet to dry fully, simply because it is thicker. Good airflow through the room and leaving bedding off until it is completely dry both help speed that up. It is worth planning the clean around a spare bed or a day the mattress will not be needed straight away.

Professional mattress cleaning treats the padding, not just the surface, which is where dust mites actually live and breed. Regular annual cleaning keeps the population down far more effectively than vacuuming the top alone.
How do you get urine out of a mattress?
With antibacterial enzyme treatment, which breaks down the odour causing bacteria at the source. Never a deodoriser, which only masks the smell, and never hot water, which sets the stain into the fabric rather than lifting it.
How long does a mattress take to dry after cleaning?
It depends on airflow and humidity, but a mattress generally takes longer than carpet to fully dry since it is thicker. Keeping the room ventilated and avoiding bedding on top until it is fully dry speeds the process up.
Why does a mattress need cleaning if the sheets are washed regularly?
Sheets only protect the very top layer. Body oils, sweat and dust still work their way through into the mattress padding underneath over time, along with dust mites, none of which washing the sheets reaches.
Is mattress cleaning worth it every year?
Yes, given how much time is spent in direct contact with it every night. An annual clean keeps body oils, dust mites and allergens from building up to the point where they affect sleep quality and indoor air quality.
