Short answer: silverfish are attracted to humidity and starchy materials, paper, book bindings, wallpaper glue and some fabrics, and are most active at night. Their presence often signals a persistently damp area worth checking, and reducing that humidity has more lasting impact than repeated spot treatment of individual insects.

What silverfish actually are, and why the Gold Coast suits them
Silverfish are small, wingless, silver-grey insects that favour dark, humid spaces, exactly the conditions a Gold Coast home can offer year round given the region's climate. They feed on starchy materials, paper, book bindings, wallpaper glue and some fabrics, and are most active at night, which is why an infestation can be well established before anyone notices.
Where to look
Bathrooms, laundries, roof cavities, storage boxes and bookshelves are the usual spots, anywhere combining moisture with something starchy to feed on. A build-up of shed skin or small irregular holes in paper or fabric are often the first visible sign, ahead of actually seeing the insect itself.
Reducing humidity is the real fix
Killing the silverfish you can see does not address why they are there in the first place. Reducing humidity in the areas they favour, better ventilation, a dehumidifier, fixing any damp source, has more lasting impact than repeated spot treatment, since new silverfish will keep moving in while the conditions stay the same.
When to bring in professional treatment
If numbers are genuinely established rather than the odd sighting, professional treatment can reduce the population significantly. We will be upfront that, like spiders and fleas, silverfish treatment does not carry a warranty, since they move in and out from the surrounding environment continuously rather than living in one fixed colony.

Got questions? Straight answers below. Or skip ahead:
They do not bite people, but they do damage what they eat, paper, book bindings, wallpaper glue, some fabrics and stored cardboard. Their presence is more a nuisance and hygiene concern than a health risk.
Why do silverfish keep coming back after I've killed the ones I see?
Killing visible silverfish does not address the humidity that is drawing them in. If the damp conditions they favour are not reduced, new ones simply move in to replace them.
Why does silverfish treatment not carry a warranty?
Silverfish move in and out from surrounding areas constantly, drawn by ongoing humidity rather than living in one fixed colony the way some other pests do. That makes a warranty impractical to offer honestly, the same reasoning that applies to spiders, fleas and rodents.
What is the fastest way to reduce silverfish indoors?
Reducing humidity in the areas they favour, bathrooms, laundries, storage areas, generally has more lasting impact than repeated spot treatment of individual insects. A dehumidifier or better ventilation in a consistently damp area is often the real fix.
