Why there is no flat rate

Rug cleaning gets the same phone question as carpet and couch cleaning: "what does it cost?" The honest answer is we cannot give one number without seeing the rug, because rugs vary far more than carpet does. A small synthetic hallway runner is a different job to a large hand knotted wool rug worth thousands of dollars, and treating them the same way would either overcharge the easy job or risk damaging the harder one.

That is why we give an estimate, not a quote. A minimum call-out of $145 plus GST applies to every job. This covers the technician's time to properly identify the fibre, the construction and the soiling before any product touches the rug, so the figure reflects your rug, not an average.

Why fibre type drives the price more than almost anything else

Rugs come in far more fibre types than carpet, and each one behaves differently under water, heat and pressure. Wool is the most common premium rug fibre. It needs pH balanced products and careful temperature and moisture management, which takes more time and skill than a synthetic rug. Synthetics like polypropylene, polyester, nylon and acrylic are the most resilient and forgiving fibres, and generally respond well to professional steam extraction at a lower cost. Cotton is cleanable but prone to shrinkage if it is over-wetted, so it needs its own careful approach. Blends get assessed on the dominant fibre and the proportion of any moisture sensitive content before we start.

Some fibres are not wet cleaned at all. Silk and bamboo silk are highly sensitive to moisture, pH imbalance and agitation, and incorrect cleaning causes permanent colour bleed, distortion and watermarks. Viscose and rayon, sometimes sold as "art silk," watermark, brown and distort with water. Jute, seagrass and sisal shrink, distort, brown and can rot when wet cleaned, and need dry methods only. We identify the fibre before we quote or clean anything, and if a rug should not be wet cleaned, we say so rather than risk damage we cannot undo.

One regular client, a whole home of quality rugs

The rug pictured above belongs to a regular client we visit a couple of times a year, carpets and rugs together in the same visit. Quality rugs run through nearly every room of their home, several different fibres under the one roof, and each one gets the product suited to its own fibre rather than a single wash-through approach for the whole house. This is exactly the kind of job where identifying the fibre first matters most. Treat a delicate fibre the same as a resilient synthetic one and the risk is permanent damage, not a clean.

What else drives the price

• Size. A small runner takes less time and product than a large living room rug.
• Construction. Woven, tufted, hand knotted and flatwoven rugs all respond to moisture differently, which affects how carefully and how quickly a job can be done.
• Soiling and staining. A rug that has not been cleaned in years, or carries an established stain, takes more time than routine maintenance.
• Pet odour and urine. This needs antibacterial or antimicrobial enzyme treatment rather than a standard clean, which is priced as its own part of the job.
• Access. Ground floor with easy access is a different job to a rug that needs to be moved through a difficult apartment or upstairs area.

None of these make a job good or bad, they just change what is involved, and an accurate estimate accounts for all of them before we start.

On-site cleaning, every time

We clean rugs on-site, in your home, and we do not take rugs off-site to clean. This keeps your rug in view the whole time and avoids the transport risk and turnaround delay of an off-site facility. It also means the price reflects the actual conditions of your home, your rug and its access, not a generic off-site processing fee.

Why pet odour is priced separately

Pet odour is one of the most common reasons customers call us for a rug clean. When urine soaks into a rug, it penetrates the pile and often the backing underneath, leaving uric acid crystals behind as it dries. These crystals reactivate with moisture and warm air, which is why a rug that seemed fine in winter can smell noticeably worse in a Gold Coast summer. We treat this with antibacterial enzyme treatment, or antimicrobial enzyme treatment for heavier, more established soiling, which breaks down the odour causing bacteria at the source rather than masking it. This takes more time and product than a routine clean, which is why it is priced as its own part of the job.

Why the cheapest option is not always the cheapest

A low price on rug cleaning sometimes means a shortcut, and shortcuts on the wrong fibre cause damage that cannot be reversed. The wrong product or too much moisture on a wool or silk rug can cause permanent colour bleed, watermarking or shrinkage. A rug worth replacing after a bad clean costs far more than the honest estimate would have. Paying once for the right process on the right fibre is usually cheaper than paying to replace a rug that did not need replacing.
