Short answer: mosquitoes are covered under general pest control, but a perimeter treatment that stops ants and cockroaches from entering a home does not stop mosquitoes breeding in a blocked gutter three metres away. Reducing mosquito activity properly means combining pest treatment with eliminating standing water on the property, since that is where they actually come from.

Why mosquitoes are different to the rest of the pest list
Ants, cockroaches, spiders and rodents are largely dealt with by treating entry points and nesting areas around a home, a barrier the pest has to travel through to get inside. Mosquitoes don't nest in a home the same way. They breed in still water nearby, a blocked gutter, a pot saucer, an old tyre, a bird bath, and fly in from wherever that water is sitting, sometimes from well outside the treated property. Treating the perimeter of one property reduces mosquito activity, but it can't remove a breeding source the technician has no control over.
What actually helps
Proven deterrents
Eliminate standing water: Blocked gutters, pot saucers, bird baths, old tyres, and any vessel collecting rainwater are mosquito breeding sites. Check after every rain event.
Citronella: Citronella candles and plants in outdoor areas provide some deterrence in enclosed spaces, useful for outdoor entertaining.
Lavender: Lavender plants on balconies and patios repel mosquitoes, moths and flies. Lavender oil on exposed skin is a mild natural repellent.
Mosquito dunks: For ornamental ponds and water features that can't be emptied, Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) mosquito dunks kill mosquito larvae without harming fish, birds or pets.
Mosquito eggs can hatch in standing water within around 48 hours, which is faster than most other pests on our general list respond to a change in conditions. That is why checking gutters and saucers after every rain event matters more here than almost anywhere else.
Save this one. 4 proven deterrents, the 48 hour rain check.
Where professional pest control still helps
A general pest treatment around the home still reduces resting and hiding mosquito populations in garden beds and shaded areas, which lowers overall activity, especially combined with the standing water elimination above. Booking pest control alongside doing your own water checks is the most effective combination, rather than expecting either one on its own to fully solve a mosquito problem.
Got questions? Straight answers below. Or skip ahead:
It reduces mosquito activity around the treated property but rarely eliminates it entirely, since breeding may be happening in standing water off the property that the treatment can't reach.
What actually stops mosquitoes breeding?
Eliminating standing water is the single biggest factor, gutters, pot saucers, old tyres and anything else holding rainwater after a storm.
How quickly can mosquitoes breed after rain?
Mosquito eggs can hatch in standing water within around 48 hours, so checking gutters and saucers after every rain event matters more for mosquitoes than for most other pests.
Are mosquito dunks safe to use around pets and fish?
Yes. Bti mosquito dunks used in ponds and water features that can't be emptied kill mosquito larvae without harming fish, birds or pets.
