Short answer: small cockroaches turning up all through a home usually point to German cockroaches, and on inspection that is what this Burleigh Waters home had. German cockroaches live and breed indoors, so the treatment goes where they breed, not just where they are seen. Here that was the gaps beneath the bathroom sinks and in and around the back of the dishwasher, treated with gel baits and a range of other methods. The home is now on a German cockroach program, maintained with a view to reducing the infestation.

A new home, and cockroaches already in it

German cockroach treatment, Burleigh Waters. Left, treating the gaps around the pipes beneath a bathroom vanity. Right, gel bait going in under the kitchen benchtop.

We did the rental exit carpet clean and flea treatment for this customer recently, at the place they were moving out of. This call was about the new property they had moved into.

They had noticed small cockroaches throughout, and some large ones as well. That mix is worth paying attention to, because the small ones are usually the more telling of the two.

On inspection, they were German cockroaches, and they were treated accordingly. The photo above shows two of the spots that were treated: the pipe gaps under a bathroom vanity, and gel bait going in under the kitchen benchtop.

Why small cockroaches usually mean German cockroaches

German cockroaches are the small ones: light brown, with two dark stripes behind the head. Unlike the Australian cockroach, they live and breed indoors, favouring the warmth and moisture of kitchens and bathrooms.

Australian cockroaches are typically larger, and they usually come in from outside in smaller numbers. A large one on its own is often just a visitor. Lots of small ones through the house is a population breeding somewhere inside.

German cockroaches also avoid light and are mostly active at night, so what you see is rarely the whole picture. If you want to check which one you are dealing with, our German vs Australian cockroach guide covers the 10 second ID.

Where they were breeding: under the bathroom sinks and behind the dishwasher

This is the part most people would not think to check. The cockroaches were breeding in the gaps beneath the sinks in the bathrooms, and in and around the back of the dishwasher.

Both spots give a German cockroach everything it wants: warmth, moisture, and a dark gap nobody disturbs. Under a vanity there are pipe gaps and a cabinet floor that rarely gets emptied. Behind a dishwasher there is warmth from the cycles, water close by, and crumbs that never get swept.

Those are the spots that decide whether a treatment works. Bait placed where cockroaches are seen running across a bench does far less than bait placed where they are breeding. There is more on these hiding spots in where cockroaches hide in a kitchen and bathroom.

Got questions? Straight answers below. Or skip ahead:

Gel baits and a range of methods, not a spray

Gel baits did the main work here, with a range of other methods alongside them, matched to each spot.

Gel bait works because cockroaches carry it back to where they hide, so it reaches the ones you never see. A spray only kills what it directly touches. On German cockroaches, spraying usually scatters the colony into more cupboards and makes the next treatment harder, not easier.

That is also why we ask people to hold off on supermarket sprays once the baits are in. A cockroach that has scattered is not feeding on the bait.

Why German cockroaches go on a program

German cockroach work is a structured program, not a single visit, and we tell you that upfront.

They breed quickly, and their eggs are protected inside a case while they develop. One visit deals with the cockroaches feeding at the time. The visits that follow deal with the ones that hatch after it, and show us how the activity is changing.

This home is now on a German cockroach program schedule, maintained with a view to reducing the infestation. That is the honest framing. An established infestation is brought down over a series of visits, not wiped out in an afternoon.

Our 6 month cockroach warranty applies to Australian cockroaches. A German cockroach infestation is handled as a program instead, and we explain what that involves when we inspect.

What helps between visits

Leave the bait placements alone. They are small and tucked into gaps and hinges for a reason.

Keep up the normal cleaning. Wipe the benches, do not leave dishes sitting overnight, and keep food sealed. The less food there is around, the more the bait becomes the easiest meal on offer.

Fix drips and dry out under the sinks. A leaking pipe or a damp cabinet floor is a water supply. Take it away and the spot is far less attractive.

Tell us what you are seeing. Where and when you still spot them is useful at the next visit.

Pest control Burleigh Waters: what a German cockroach program costs

There is no fixed price list. It depends on the size of the property, how established the infestation is, and how many visits the program needs. The minimum call-out fee is $145 plus GST, the same across the Gold Coast to Tweed Heads area, and you get an estimate rather than a quote, because the extent of an infestation is confirmed on inspection.

A standard general pest treatment covers cockroaches, ants and spiders, and our pest control page explains how we treat Australian and German cockroaches differently. For carpet cleaning and pest control in the suburb, see our Burleigh Waters page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if I have German cockroaches?
German cockroaches are small and light brown, with two dark stripes behind the head. They live indoors, usually in kitchens and bathrooms near food and water, and they are often seen in numbers. Seeing them during the day usually means an infestation is already underway.
Where do German cockroaches breed in a home?
In warm, damp, hidden gaps close to water and food. Under bathroom and kitchen sinks, around pipes, and in and behind appliances such as the dishwasher are common spots. In this Burleigh Waters home they were breeding beneath the bathroom sinks and in and around the back of the dishwasher.
Why not just spray them?
A spray only kills the cockroaches it touches, and on German cockroaches it usually scatters the colony into more cupboards. Gel bait is carried back to where they hide, so it reaches the ones you never see.
Why does German cockroach treatment take more than one visit?
Because they breed quickly and their eggs are protected inside a case. One visit deals with what is feeding at the time, and the visits that follow deal with the next generation. That is why German cockroach work runs as a program, and we tell you that upfront.
Is gel bait safe in a home with children and pets?
Gel bait goes in as small placements tucked into cracks, gaps and hinges, out of sight and out of reach, rather than spread across open surfaces. We use low toxicity, industry approved products and explain exactly what is applied and where.
What should I do after the treatment?
Leave the bait placements alone, hold off on supermarket sprays, keep benches and floors clean, and fix any drips under the sinks. Let us know where you are still seeing activity, because that guides the next visit.
