Short answer: yes, odour can genuinely be removed from a couch or mattress, but only by treating the actual source, not by masking it. A fabric spray covers the smell with fragrance temporarily, then it comes back within a day or two. Pet urine specifically needs antibacterial enzyme treatment to break down the odour at the source, never a deodoriser and never hot water.

Why a fabric spray never actually fixes it
A fabric spray sits on top of the fibre and masks odour with fragrance. It does not reach whatever is actually causing the smell underneath, body oils built up over years, trapped moisture, or a pet accident that has soaked into the padding. Once the fragrance fades, usually within a day or two, the original smell is right back, because nothing about the actual cause changed.
What actually works
Treating the source, not the symptom. That means getting into the fabric and, where needed, the padding underneath, not just the surface. A vacuum or a wipe down only ever reaches what is on top.
Pet odour is a different job
Pet urine specifically needs antibacterial enzyme treatment, which breaks down the bacteria actually causing the smell at the source. Never a deodoriser, deodorisers mask odour rather than eliminating it. Never hot water either, heat sets the stain rather than lifting it, on a couch or mattress the same as on carpet.
Mattresses hold more than most people realise
A mattress absorbs body oils, sweat and dust over years of regular use, along with dust mites that thrive in that environment. None of that comes out with a vacuum. Professional mattress cleaning reaches into the padding itself, not just the surface, which is the difference between masking a smell and actually treating it.

Got questions? Straight answers below. Or skip ahead:
Can you really get odour out of a couch or mattress?
Yes, if the actual source of the smell is treated, not just masked. A fabric spray covers odour temporarily. Getting rid of it properly means treating what is causing it, most often trapped moisture, body oils, or a pet accident that has soaked into the fabric or padding underneath.
Why does a fabric spray only work for a little while?
Because it sits on top of the fabric and masks the smell with fragrance rather than treating what is actually causing it. Once the fragrance fades, usually within a day or two, the original odour comes right back.
Is pet odour in a couch or mattress treated differently to general odour?
Yes. Pet urine specifically needs antibacterial enzyme treatment, which breaks down the odour causing bacteria at the source, never a deodoriser or fragrance spray, which only masks it, and never hot water, which sets the stain rather than lifting it.
Can a mattress actually be properly cleaned, not just the surface?
Yes, professional mattress cleaning treats more than the surface, including body oils, dust mites and any spills that have soaked into the padding, which a vacuum or a surface wipe cannot reach.
How long does odour treatment take to work?
Improvement is often noticeable immediately after treatment, though a fabric or padding that has held an odour for a long time may need it to fully dry before the smell is completely gone.
