A Hope Island property on a four week cycle
This customer is on a four week cycle through the peak months. Most visits, there is nothing much happening on the day we turn up. That is the point of it.
They stay on it because of what happens if they do not. Leave it to the fifth or sixth week and the cycle underneath has well and truly started again, so instead of maintaining a quiet yard you are dealing with a problem. Once the numbers are up, you are behind them.
The work is the full external perimeter. There have been one or two occasions where doors were left open and they felt midges were getting inside, and we did one internal treatment on one of those. It has not been needed since.
Why the timing is what it is
Biting midges do not trickle out evenly. Adults emerge from the sand in synch with the 15 day neap to spring tide cycle, so a fresh batch of biting females can turn up roughly every fortnight. The full egg to adult cycle is far slower, about two to three months in South East Queensland, with three or four generations a year, but that runs in the background while the fortnightly waves keep landing.
A residual barrier applied to the surfaces midges rest on has evidence of holding numbers down for up to about six weeks. Put those two things together and the four to six week window is not a sales schedule, it is just where the treatment is still working when the next wave arrives.

What your neighbours do actually matters here
Canal estate midges breed in the clean sand of sheltered tidal waterways, which is exactly what a constructed canal is, and they travel 400 metres or more from where they come out. That distance is the whole problem.
Where a run of neighbours treat around the same time, it works well and everyone notices. Where one property treats and nobody else does, that property is being reinvaded from every direction and the treatment is working much harder for a smaller result. The same goes for the waterway itself. The City of Gold Coast runs its own control program on the canal beaches during peak emergence, and where that is happening it helps, but a private property still needs its own barrier.
It is one of the few pests where the honest answer to "why is it not holding?" is sometimes nothing to do with the treatment.

Peak runs roughly September to April. Spring and autumn are the strongest, summer stays busy, and winter is quiet enough that development largely stops. Summer is when the calls come, and that is only partly the insects. It is also when people are outside at dawn and dusk, which is exactly when midges are most active. The bites were always going to happen at those hours, there are just more people out there to get bitten.
So through the cooler months we pull back rather than keep billing a cycle that is not earning its place. That is the same way we handle every property on a schedule.

Same insect, different name. Biting midges are tiny flies about the size of a pinhead, and most Gold Coast locals call them sandflies. Only the female bites, using the blood to develop a batch of eggs. They are not known to spread any human disease in Australia, but the bites itch for days and can blister, and children and new arrivals usually react worst.
